Tasting Note: Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes

2007 Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes, Salta, Argentina $15.99

Some are calling Torontes the new Pinot Grigio, but this is unlikely as you can actually smell and taste Torrontes! This is quite a quirky varietal. The nose is lush and aromatic with tree fruit buds and flowers. On the palate this wine is crisp and bone dry. I mean, this wine is dying of thirst with lots of lemon citrus and piercing acidity. It finishes with a musky floral mineral note. Good stuff and very refreshing in the Warm months!

This is the first one I’ve had.

  4. Yes–I loved this one, and your notes get the essentials. Had it just last night. Opened it to start off a dinner that began with garlic prawns, but no one would give up the bottle. It’s luscious and rich in the nose and on the palate but it’s also crisp and fresh in the finish and against the food. The rich floral aromas make it hard to take one’s nose away from the glass. Perfect summer white. 13.8% but I would never have guessed it. No heat at all.

@Nathan – Thanks for the comment, Nathan. We just had this again with grilled swordfish marinated in lemon juice and lager. It went beautifully with it.
